Why we became involved:
Every once in a while, people are granted a chance to truly help others. With this online store we have been given that same opportunity. As my family and I have traveled all over Ohio, we have been introduced into the private world of the Amish community. Some have seen us as ordinary tourists while others have made lasting friendships with us, allowing an inside look at this amazing lifestyle.
One Saturday, while driving to one of our closest friends Amish farm, we passed an Amish buggy traveling toward town. We accepted and returned the customary wave as we crossed paths. It was then that I realized some of the children driving this Amish buggy were the same children of the family we were on our way to visit. These children were almost 10 miles (3 hours) from home. I turned the car around and flagged the children down. I had to know if everything was okay.
As I approached the horse drawn buggy carriage I noticed it packed full of Amish handmade tin metal barn star stars, primitve baskets, home and garden crafts, produce and baked goods. I wondered if they had come back from the Amish market or perhaps an auction. I greeted the kids and asked if everything was ok or if they needed any help. The Amish children assured me everything was fine and stated that they were on their way to sell their Amish hand made tin metal barn star stars, primitive baskets, home and garden crafts, produce and baked goods alongside a more populated road. When I asked where they were headed, they told me. I realized that these children were going to be driving this Amish buggy over 15 miles from home. Doing the math quickly, I discovered this to be over a 4-hour buggy ride from home! I knew the Amish family sold these unique, hand made primitive barn star stars, baskets, wood wagon wheels and reclaimed barn wood crafts but it never occurred to me that they had to travel in order to make a few sales.
My girlfriend and I looked through the Amish buggy and looked at some of the amazing prices these children had on their Amish hand made barn star stars, primitive baskets and other home and garden goods. As we looked at each other in disbelief, I decided to purchase the entire buggy full of tin metal barn star stars, primitive baskets and wood wagon wheels. Their son, Noah, age 13, explained with tears in his eyes, that he and Mary, age 10, had expected to sit out by the road until 3 hours before dark, when they would then pack up the remaining Amish tin metal barn star stars, primitive baskets, home and garden crafts, reclaimed barn wood crafts, fine furniture, produce and baked goods and make the journey back home. Only to do it again the next day! This was a customary thing to do during the summer when school was out and it wasn't crop season.
I knew that the Amish community in which this particular Old Order Amish family lives, were referred to as "Dusty Amish". This community or "Ordnung" was given this name by the less conservative "Amish Country" Amish community. You know, the Amish located in Berlin, etc. It simply meant that this community of Amish, were the poorer Amish. I, myself, couldn't stand this. I thought it to be an ugly, slanderous term. I knew though, in my heart, they had to be a happier people. They were the closest family unit I had ever seen. They hadn't been "tainted" by greed or by the outside influences that many other Amish had been. I had to do something to help this Amish family. I had to do something, to help my friends.
We continued on our way to the primitive Amish farm. We met our Old Order Amish friends and were invited into one of the outbuildings that has been transformed into their workshop where the Father and Mother were busy making hand weaved primitive baskets, tin metal barn star stars and other home and garden goods. I couldn't believe the quality in these Amish hand made goods. I told my friends that I had seen their children on their way to set up a stand alongside the road and that before they were able to reach their destination, I had purchased all they had in the primitive Amish buggy. I received a strange look from the Father as he asked, "What will you do with all of that stuff”? I told him that I was going to be giving it to friends and family as gifts for different occasions. I mean really, who wouldn't want a tin metal barn star stars, primitive basket, decorative wood wagon wheel, a piece of fine furniture, reclaimed barn wood bench, or other home and garden Amish hand made product?
As we continued to talk about the weather and the crops, my girlfriend approached me and asked if she could talk to me outside. I obliged and met her outside the shop. She explained that the Amish hand made tin metal barn star stars, reclaimed barn wood products, home and garden crafts and primitive baskets that were so unique that they needed to be shared with the world. We both decided that we should help our Old Order Amish friends by placing these unique and quality hand made Amish products on the Internet offered at an amazing price. We returned to the inside of the shop and spoke with our friends about the idea. We told the Amish family that their Amish hand made products would be offered to anyone and everyone in the world. They couldn't believe that a picture of an Amish made primitive basket or tin metal barn star stars would be seen by anyone in the world who wanted to see it. I assured them that it would and explained it would take some time before people found our online store where they could order these Old Order Amish hand made products from them.
The Father began explaining that making and selling these home and garden craft items were one of the sole ways they had to make money while waiting on the crops. He said that occasionally someone would stop by to purchase some maple syrup and end up picking a tin metal barn star stars, primitive basket, barn wood bench, birhouse, or something else up. But for the most part the children would do their part by driving the "cart" to the heavily traveled main state route. He also explained that his wife would worry herself sick about the children being gone all day but knew it was necessary to better of the family.
The Amish children then returned from their road trip. The father greeted them outside taking the horses for his son. He then, in front of his entire family made the most honored saying I had ever heard. He said,"Children, go about your day tomorrow with free time. Brother Christian has offered this family a relief larger than anyone would ever understand. Your Mother and I have decided to take an offer Brother Christian proposed and you will no longer be going to sell along the road". The reason this was so honoring is the Father had never referred to me as "Brother". I knew I couldn't let him down.
Before leaving for the day, we took several pictures and samples from the Amish families primitive craft barn. As we drove home my girlfriend and I enthusiastically discussed the impending online store and how much it would help the family.
Once the online store was up and running we returned to our Old Order Amish friends family’s farm to place the first order for hand made tin metal barn star stars, primitive baskets, birdhouses, fine furniture and other products that had sold. The father and children were working in the fields. The mother invited us inside the house where she was preparing lunch for the family. We made ourselves at home while we waited for the family to return from the field before we announced the great news. As we placed the order, the Amish family was amazed at the barn star stars, primitive baskets, bird houses and wood wagon wheel wheels they once thought was ordinary, had become a much sought after commodity. We were invited to stay and break bread with them. We cherish the fellowship we have with this family.
We returned a day or two later to pick up the Amish made tin metal barn star stars and found that the primitive craft barn was full of unique Old Order Amish hand made products that we had never known the family to make. Jacob, the oldest boy, was home alone waiting for us to arrive. He said that his Father had told the church of his English friend, who was selling the hand made products for him. Many members approached him with products asking him to have us sell them as well. This allowed us to expand our online store helping many Old Order Amish families beyond anything they could have done for themselves. It puts a warm spot in our heart, to have such dear friends that we are able to help make their lives just a little bit easier.
Please remember the hard work that goes into each of these Old Order Amish hand made tin metal barn star stars, primitive baskets, home and garden crafts, wood wagon wheels, recalimed barnwood products, bird houses and fine furniture as you purchase them for your home and garden decor. It means a lot to the Amish community as well as us, their friends!
